April 22, 2024 11:00 am - 3:45 pm
Burnaby Art Gallery, 6344 Deer Lake Ave, Burnaby, BC V5G 2J3, Canada
Raku is an ancient Japanese technique that involves painting clay pieces with metal ion solutions and firing them to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit in a kiln. The artistic results following this dramatic process are iridescent and unique in colour, shape, and texture. Chemistry 12 students have been learning about this technique as an application of reduction-oxidation reactions and have sculpted and painted their own raku pieces. Their visit to the Burnaby Art Gallery to fire their pieces in a kiln will be the culmination of this transdisciplinary project.
