November 2, 2018

Dear Urban Academy Families,

Our students enjoyed their week, especially with Hallowe’en in the middle of it, always a special time of year for youngsters. Please scroll down in today’s email to see an invitation from our Board of Directors to the community AGM on November 20. We look forward to hosting you that evening and will send a formal evite out for your response on Monday.

Sonya Das Gupta has stepped forward to take on the role of Volunteer Coordinator. She will remain on PAX and transition into this new leadership role with help from Joanne Ward. Thank you, Sonya for taking on this role in service to our community and support for our school.

This coming week the school pays tribute to Remembrance Day. The Armistice is an important acknowledgement in Canadian schools and an assembly marking the day and teaching children the value of a peaceful land that others sacrificed for, is something that we plan for carefully. Teachers have been providing instruction in classes on Remembrance Day and we have an assembly planned. We are marking Remembrance at Queens Avenue United Church on the morning of November 8 with all students in attendance. We will start the assembly at 11:00 am and parents are most welcome to join us. Students will be provided with a poppy to wear that day and they will need to be in formal uniform. The school makes a donation to the Poppy Fund on behalf of our students. Please mark your calendar so that your child has formal uniform organized and if you are free to join us, please do so.

Our Annual Appeal is in its fourth week and we are doing well with $49,000 donated by our families. Please be part of surpassing our goal – thank you for your generosity. I have included the donor form for you if you have not yet donated. Please go through it and determine your level of contribution. The Appeal funds additional resources and learning opportunities for your children as well as contributes to our new school facility, a learning environment that all of our students will enjoy.

Please save the date and plan to join us on the evening of Saturday, March 2, 2019 for our largest fundraising event of the year – the annual UA Gala. This year’s theme is the Hats Off Gala and will once again take place at the Aria Banquet Hall just across the Pattullo Bridge. The Gala evening, which includes entertainment, full dinner, silent and live auctions and the many fun surprises that your Gala Committee has in store, is always one to remember and a wonderful atmosphere to enjoy the company of your friends and fellow parent community. More information on ticket sales will follow shortly.

Have an enjoyable weekend.
