Dear Urban Academy Families,

Thank you for joining us at the Spring Plays this week. They were a lot of fun for the students to share with you and you can see their maturing work. Our Music program is steadily growing and developing as is our Drama program. The experience that the students have gained on stage shows at each subsequent performance. I noticed at Mother’s Day Tea that our youngest students were quite confident up there, performing for their moms. They had never been in the theatre space to perform and had never stepped up on a riser, nor learned how to exit or enter the space – and yet they were focused on performing for their mothers, singing their hearts out. It was heartwarming and a good indicator of the learning that they are gaining in the Performing Arts program.

Our Art Exhibition is up in the foyer for our community to enjoy and the student work is beautiful. Thank you to Ms. Lindsey McEwen for taking the lead on this and arranging the exhibit and the display of the work. Ms. Meghan Budd worked with her on the middle and senior art as well. The display of the work is excellent and another example of our students’ learning in the Fine Arts. Their skills in the Visual Arts continue to grow and they are learning the finer points regarding how their work is displayed and appreciated.

It is a pleasure to share with you the news that one of our parent leaders, Rupa Marcus, has agreed to take on the role of Class Parent Co-ordinator for next year. I am so pleased that Rupa has stepped up to this opportunity, as it is an important one in our school community and I know she will work diligently with class parents. Thank you to Pindy Lalli for leading our class parents as Co-ordinator for several years. She did a fantastic job and she leaves the position in great condition for Rupa.Thank you Rupa, for taking this on. We know that this area will be a great support to teachers and parents alike.

Suzette Willems will step down as PAX Chair at the end of this year and I want to express my heartfelt thanks for her work. She is a dedicated volunteer and supporter of UA and her leadership is very valued. I have appreciated how she has worked with the Head of School on parent leadership and wish to thank her for that. We are most fortunate with all of our volunteers and parent leaders. We do have new folks stepping up in all areas of the school to help guide our developing school and it is deeply appreciated.

Enjoy a lovely long weekend with your family. We look forward to seeing everyone again on Tuesday morning.

Mrs. Cheryle Beaumont
Head of School
