Head of School’s Weekly Message
March 9, 2018
Dear Urban Academy Families,
Thank you to our community for an outstanding Gala last weekend! Our guests enjoyed a wonderful evening and the fundraising was most successful. We are still doing some of the final work on the accounting but it would appear that this year we exceeded all other Galas with the total of $94,000 raised! Thank you to all who contributed to the Silent and Live Auctions, the sponsors and donations and to the Open Appeal – we were really able to move our goals for educational technology forward. Thank you to a very accomplished Gala Committee and their Chair, Heather Hall, an exemplary job yet again!
The link for Gala donating is still live for those who want to provide a gift at:
Report cards are out and families are in the midst of parent teacher interviews and student-led conferences. If you need to follow up with a teacher to discuss your child’s progress in more detail, please do not hesitate to make an additional appointment to see them or talk on the phone. I am pleased with student progress this term and next week we celebrate the Honour Roll and Head of School’s Honours List at Uptown.
Staff at both campuses practice fire and earthquake drills with students and after the break, we will once again work on Code Yellow Lockdown drill. This is the most common kind of lockdown for schools, used when there may be a threat in the neighbourhood and the police want children safely inside their school and not outside. With this procedure, the doors of the school remain locked, students and staff go about their business inside the building but no one goes outside until the lockdown is lifted. No one is admitted to the school either. We follow the same kind of procedure that other schools and public buildings use for this drill and work with the police on the expectations. While we do not wish to alarm students, they do need to learn to follow instructions in the event of an incident that could pose a threat to the school. Staff will be sending a message home to you once we settle on a day for the drill and the work with students.
Have an enjoyable weekend and we will see everyone on Monday.
