Head of School’s Weekly Message
April 6, 2018
Dear Urban Academy Families,
I hope everyone enjoyed Spring Break – students and staff are back, refreshed and energized and ready for a wonderful final term. A number of spring activities are already underway. Three middle school students are at Regional Science Fair; Daniel Fletcher, Sonia Kazakova and Charlie Fallowfield. Our intermediate and middle school students are ready to compete in Public Speaking competitions held at Crofton and York House. In Athletics, we are competing for the first time in Ultimate Frisbee with other ISABC schools. Senior students are off for a few days of extended field study at the Shakespeare Festival in the Okanagan and will round out the trip with a visit to the Okanagan UBC campus to learn of the opportunities there for them. You will see a wonderful array of the clubs at the Junior School outlined in this email.
Staff are turning their attention to camp for all of our students. Our youngest “camp”, for JK-Grade 1, is at home with well-planned and fun camp experiences at Robson Manor. Grade 2-5 students enjoy Camp Cheakamus on the coast and middle school students go to Strathcona Park Outdoor Education Centre on the Vancouver Island. We booked these venues over a year ago but planning for the program is underway now. For the campers in Grades 2-5 we will host a parent session to answer questions on the camp program and the plans once we get closer to the date. Information packages on the various camps are starting to go out to families this week.
Over Spring Break, I hosted the team from PALS at Robson. PALS is the school that has purchased Robson and will move in once we vacate for our new school. Spring Break was perfect for a visit as our school was quiet with no instruction underway. They wanted to better acquaint themselves with the building and start to think about how they would use the facility for their students. It is a pleasure to think that this lovely building will be home to another small school providing for the future of their students. If you have driven past Braid and Rousseau, you will notice steady progress on our new school as the walls go up and up and up!
Have a good weekend.
