Head of School’s Weekly Message
June 15, 2018
Dear Urban Academy Families,
Our middle school students return today from an excellent camp experience this week at Strathcona Lodge on Vancouver Island. Strathcona offers a wonderful program and is well-suited to that age group. Middle school campers need a full program, great food and lot of activity and learning, and that is what they had this week – as well as a lot of fun!
The final week of school is coming up. Teachers will be having students clear out the classroom and lockers to take home their personal effects, with Tuesday, June 19 being the day most of that occurs. They will let you know what they require in terms of extra bags or preparation for students to take home their things. Please go through the available lost and found items at both campuses so that you can retrieve that lost new sweater or water bottle. Both schools will put out lost and found items and will speak to students at assembly and Opening Circle. We do hold on to the items for a few days, but not indefinitely. Any items with the old logo will go into the clothing recycle bin if it is not claimed. Sports Day is on Wednesday, June 20 and parents are welcome to drop by Queen’s Park as our students from both Robson and Uptown take part in a fun day together. We provide a pizza lunch for the students, so you will not have to provide lunch that day for all K – Grade 12 students. JK is at school that day and will have lunch at school with their usual routine.
Each year at this time a few parents want to request a specific teacher for next year. The placement of students into classes is the responsibility of the Head of School. We take placement very seriously and take many factors into consideration as we balance classrooms; gender balance, a heterogeneous class mix, size of class, students who work well together and those who don’t, just to name a few of the points of discussion. Staff participate in the deliberations and we spend many hours on this task. You will learn of your child’s classroom placement at the Back to School Barbeque on August 29. Senior students (grades 9-12) will have their timetables in their report card envelopes going home next week as a number of them have preparation to do before their fall classes start. We have sent home the materials from the JK and K orientation to all of those families so that they can prepare for September in the upcoming weeks.
Enjoy the weekend and we look forward to a wonderful last week of classes.
