Head of School’s Weekly Message
November 3, 2017
Dear Urban Academy Families,
Thank you to the Hallowe’en Planning Committee for providing an enjoyable party for parents last weekend at Robson Manor. They always put care and thought in to the decorations, refreshments and a plan for guests to have fun. The students at Robson enjoyed the decorations and the ambience created when they came to school on Monday morning.
Your Gala Committee has been in full swing now for months, planning the Gala fundraiser for next spring on March 3. The theme this year is “An Evening of Dreams” and it will be, as it always is, an amazing event from start to finish. If you are a new family to our community, this is our largest social event of the year and a major fundraiser for the school. You will hear more information coming from your Gala Committee and they will be selling tickets as early as our Winter Concert at the Anvil Centre in December.
Please remember to mark your calendar for November 16, the Urban Academy Society’s Annual General Meeting at 7:00 pm at the Uptown campus. The Audited Financial Statements and the Annual Report will be provided to all of our families electronically on November 9 with hard copies available at the meeting. We will also be sharing our next five-year Strategic Plan (2018-2023) for the school that night. This is an excellent opportunity to hear from the Board their priorities going forward as we grow and develop our school. We will also have our lead architect, Paul Grant, in attendance to share the progress on the site at Rousseau Street. Please plan to join us to hear the information and ask questions.
On Friday, November 10 at 11:30am our students will mark Remembrance Day with an assembly at Queens Avenue United Church. This is a formal uniform day for all students and an important assembly as schools all across Canada teach children to honour the sacrifice made by others for their freedom. Our students will perform music and drama work designed to share their reflections on the peace that we value. One of our parents, Elizabeth Fletcher, will speak at the assembly as well. If you are able to join us, please feel welcome to do so. We will start promptly at 11:30am and will finish shortly after 12:00pm.
The weather is turning colder this week and students need to be dressed suitably for outdoor play as the temperature dips. Please ensure that your child has an outdoor coat that complies with the Uniform Manual and policy. We do not deviate from school uniform for outdoor clothes until the temperature is colder than 4 degrees Celsius however, that is not expected to be the case this week. They do need an appropriate outdoor coat, boots and if necessary gloves and a hat.
Have an enjoyable weekend and we will see everyone on Monday morning.
