Dear Urban Academy Families,

Thank you for a good week. We are really getting settled with eLearning and a number of very creative teaching techniques are emerging. Teachers are discovering some hidden talents that they are bringing forward to support our students. We have started to try out Zoom class meetings with some of the younger classes, we hope that they are enjoying the experience.

Our May school activities are now cancelled or adjusted for next year, and we are working carefully through agreements with service providers to ensure all parties understand the resolution we are reaching regarding rebookings. We know that our school community looks forward to the Spring Plays that are performed yearly at the Massey Theatre. While that will not be possible this year, we recognize that a lot of work by both students and staff has already gone into these productions. At this point, we anticipate performing “Winnie the Pooh” and “Alice in Wonderland” at the Winter Concert in December at Massey. How we will reorganize all of the aspects of the Winter Concert is still a work in progress, but we do want to preserve the work done so far and adhere to the commitment we have made to students.

I had planned to host our middle and senior parents and students on May 6 to provide a workshop on graduation requirements and post-secondary options. We will postpone this for now with the hope that we may be able to hold it in June. This is an important planning event for our middle and senior families, and Ms. MacLeod and I were very much looking forward to it. Stay tuned!

We are less than three weeks from interim reports for Grade 6-12 students and careful thought is going into how we handle that for parents and students. Formal assessments for work are in place and teachers are considering methods by which they can examine learning using the current eLearning formats we have underway. Thank you for your support and encouragement of your children’s work, it is very appreciated.

Have an enjoyable weekend.

Mrs. Cheryle Beaumont
Head of School
